DESCRIPTION:CHEER Webinar Series 2024-2025: Reimagining Indigenous Research Ethics in Canada: Charting a New Course with Dr. Sean Hillier. \nEthical research with and alongside Indigenous Peoples and communities has made significant progress over the past decades. However\, many “well-intentioned” research projects still fall short by failing to respect Indigenous sovereignty\, lived experiences\, and cultural values. As scientific innovation advances\, it becomes increasingly critical to develop and implement research ethics frameworks that prioritize Indigenous rights and community-defined goals. \nThis talk examines the urgent need for a paradigm shift in how academic institutions\, industry leaders\, and community partners collaborate with Indigenous Peoples and communities to address the complex challenges arising in our rapidly evolving world. \nDr. Sean Hillier\nDr. Sean Hillier is a Mi’kmaw scholar (Qalipu First Nation). He is theAssociate Dean\, Research & Innovation and associate professor in theFaculty of Health at York University. His collaborative researchprogram spans the topics of aging\, living with HIV and other infectiousdiseases\, and One Health – all with a concerted focus on policyaffecting health care access for Indigenous Peoples. He is a member ofthe Interagency Panel on Research Ethics and is currently the Vice-Chair of the Indigenous Research Ethics Board at York University. Dr.Hillier has been successful in receiving funding from each of the threefederal granting agencies and is the current Inaugural AssociateDirector of the $318 million research project\, Connected Minds: Neuraland Machine Systems for a Healthy Just Society.

SUMMARY:ASK US: What is CRAFT and its involvement in clinical trials in BC?
DESCRIPTION:People who live far from healthcare sites where clinical trials are primarily offered can often experience barriers to participating in trials. \nThe Canadian Remote Access Framework for Clinical Trials (CRAFT) helps enable clinical trial participation for such patients. By reducing travel times and associated costs\, CRAFT makes trials more accessible to rural and remote populations. In BC\, CRAFT has enabled researchers to open more clinical trials in the North and other rural areas\, leading to increased participation from rural and Indigenous patients. \nThe guest speakers for this episode are Dr. Bernie Eigl\, medical oncologist\, BC Cancer and Dr. Robert Olson\, provincial division head of radiology oncology\, UBC. Our guest speakers were involved in the creation of the CRAFT framework. Dr. Eigl was the recipient of the Service and Support Award and Dr. Olson was the recipient of the Leadership and Advocacy Award for the 2024 Clinical Trials BC Awards. \nRegister for the first ASK US episode of 2025 to hear Drs. The focus of his roles is to strengthen and further develop the clinical trial capabilities of all six BC Cancer centres\, and to improve access to clinical trials for those living with cancer across British Columbia. His own research interests focus on genitourinary oncology clinical trials and biomarker research\, with a special focus in bladder cancer. \n  \n \nDr. Robert Olson  \nProfessor and head\, division of radiation oncology\, department of surgery\, faculty of medicine\, University of British Columbia  \nExecutive medical director\, BC Cancer – Prince George\, Provincial Health Services Authority \nDr. Rob Olson is a clinician scientist who lives in Prince George\, BC. He is the provincial division head of radiation oncology at UBC. He practices radiation oncology at BC Cancer – Prince George\, where he is the executive medical director\, and predominantly treats breast cancer\, head and neck cancer\, and metastatic disease. He is the lead of several international clinical trials looking at the use of precision radiotherapy in the setting of oligometastatic disease\, where he proudly leads a team of dedicated research staff from northern BC. In his spare time\, he spends time with his family (which includes four kids\, three dogs\, and a cat)\, and he enjoys skiing\, biking\, swimming\, or preferably running.

DESCRIPTION:The publication of the WHO guidance for best practices for clinical trials in September 2024 was a major milestone. For the first time there is now global guidance applicable to design and conduct of all clinical trials (whether or not they include investigational products)\, also with relevance to observational studies. \nKey areas of focus include embedding research into health systems\, developing sustained networks of continuously active clinical researchers\, greater inclusivity of diverse population groups\, the centrality of the need for interaction between patient/community groups and researchers in the trial life cycle\, simplifying what can be excessively complex and uncoordinated clinical trial approval processes involving many bodies\, and ensuring a risk-based\, proportionate approach to design\, data collection\, oversight and inspection. WHO and The Global Health Network are convening a global event to present the key aspects of this new guidance. \nThis will be an informative opportunity to hear directly from WHO and learn how this guidance can help support and strengthen your research. SUMMARY:2024 Investigator Training Program (ITP) - Safety in Clinical Trials
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce that “Pan-Canadian Research Connect” is once again offering the Investigator Training Program (ITP) in collaboration with Pfizer. This year\, the program will feature 7 comprehensive modules designed to provide an in-depth overview of the clinical trial process\, offering practical recommendations to enhance the efficiency of clinical trial conduct. \nThe ITP is an excellent opportunity for clinical trial investigators and research staff who are new to clinical trials or who could benefit from a refresher course. Participation and registration are open to all researchers and the research community within the Research Connect Network. Those who attend all seven modules will be eligible to receive a TransCelerate Good Clinical Practices (GCP) Certificate. \nKey Highlights for 2024: \n\nComplete 7 Modules for Certification: This year’s program consists of 7 modules. Full attendance at all modules is required to receive the formal certificate.\nRegister Early: Registration is limited to 500 participants. Please ensure your participation by registering as soon as possible. If you are unable to attend\, kindly cancel your registration to allow others the opportunity to participate.\nMandatory Full Attendance: To obtain the certificate of completion from Pfizer and TransCelerate\, you must attend the entire duration of all 7 modules. Attendance from the start to the end of each webinar is necessary. Missing even 15 minutes may disqualify you from receiving the certificate.\nPre-read Materials: Some modules will have pre-read materials that will be sent to all registered attendees. We strongly encourage an in-depth review of these materials prior to attending the training.\nRetake Requirement for Certification: If you missed any portion of the training last year\, you are required to retake all the modules again this year to receive a formal certificate.\nOptional Refresher: Those who participated last year and wish to retake the modules as a refresher are more than welcome to do so.\n\nSchedule: The webinars will be held from November 12th to November 21st. \nPlease register as soon as possible for this exciting and limited opportunity.

There is no cost to attend. \nLeaders in the health and health research ecosystems\, from patients to policy makers\, are welcome. This includes health-care providers\, health system decision-makers\, patients\, people with lived experience of health issues and the health care system\, health researchers\, and students and trainees.
